“I fell in love with yoga while dancing professionally in New York City, and then felt impelled to travel to India to study Ashtanga yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. It was a life-changing trip and I continued to study Ashtanga in NYC with Eddie Stern and also began my Iyengar yoga studies with Genevieve Kapuler and my senior Iyengar teacher, Carrie Owerko. My aim is to unite these two forms in my teaching with great respect.”
When Sondra moved from New York City to the Hudson Valley, yoga was in its infancy. She opened Sadhana Center for Yoga and Meditation in Hudson in 2003, and then Satya Yoga Center in 2005. In 2018, Sondra sold Satya to Carla Olla, the director of the newly named Rhinebeck Yoga Center. Her yoga classes are loved for their graceful flow of movement, the beautiful quality of devotion and a strong sense of community.
She is an interdisciplinary queer witch, bringing somatic practices, yoga, meditation, science, poetry and mantra into her teaching. She teaches yoga and movement improvisation at Bard College, travels widely to give yoga workshops, and leads training programs.
Sondra has returned to India several times to study more deeply: sutras with M.A. Jayashree, yoga therapy at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, and a pilgrimage of holy cities.
